Microsort offers baby sex selection services

A Virginia company is now offering a service to separate Y and X chromosome bearing sperm to control the sex of offspring. This technique is not perfectly accurate but it does tip the odds considerably. Also, each try is not guaranteed to result in a pregnancy.

From their FAQ page:

What is the chance of getting the desired gender?
Currently, MicroSort sperm separation for female gender selection (XSort) results in an average of 88% X-bearing sperm in the sorted specimen.  MicroSort sperm separation for male gender selection (YSort) currently results in an average of 73% Y-bearing sperm in the sorted specimen.  These data are determined by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) which allows the number of X- and Y-bearing sperm cells to be counted from a fraction of the sorted sample. A child of the desired gender cannot be guaranteed because the current technology does not completely exclude either female or male sperm cells from the enriched sample. Please view the Current Results page and our Journal Publication

From their Results page:

Conception Rate
The MicroSort Clinic average cumulative IUI pregnancy rate is 17% per treatment cycle.  MicroSort IUI pregnancy rate for the year 2000 was 21.5% per treatment cycle.
Pregnancies & Births
As of June 2002, a total of 460 pregnancies have been achieved using MicroSort; 295 babies have been born so far with many more due to deliver.

Microsort's services can be used long distance. A Belgian doctor in Ghent is providing sex selection services using Microsort:

A BELGIAN doctor defended has himself defiantly for offering to allow couples to choose the sex of their child, for a payment of 6,300 euros.

Dr. Frank Comhaire, a professor in fertility problems at the University of Ghent, has already started treating five women from a number of European countries, according to Belga news agency.

According to the article Belgium may soon outlaw this practice. Though if other clinics in Europe started offering it interested Belgians could get around the law. At the extreme they could travel to Virginia and use a clinic near Microsort for the service. An American woman has posted on a web page the breakdown of her costs for using the Microsort technique. Her total cost including tests, travel and hotel was $5,134.00 USD. The Microsort fee was $3,100.00.

There is even a way to increase the probability that the resulting pregnancy will yield the desired sex. In this article in The Guardian a woman reporter posing as a potential client visited Belgian Doctor Comhaire's clinic:

But to do one further check, to make sure through a pre-implantation diagnosis that the embryo is in fact the desired sex, will cost a further €6,000 (£3,800). This will give a '99 per cent chance of success' - for a final price tag of just over £8,000.

and people are willing to cross national borders to use the service:

The customers come from all over Europe, he said - 'from Spain, from Norway, from the UK, from Berlin'. He said several British couples had attended already and had been 'successful' - but he would not divulge their numbers or how many were pregnant.

What about the risks of exposing sperm to the DNA dye and the ultraviolet light? I believe a study is going on right now to determine whether this process causes DNA damage to the sperm and birth defects to the child. Why would anyone want to try this technique without at least knowing the results of this study?

Hello, I have been researching this whole baby gender selection process for a college project. I would just like to post a warning to all who are getting more and more excited about getting to "select" you next baby's gender. I am concerned that this whole process has not been researched enough. The future of all embryos is at stake. I urge you to concider not having the microsort or pgd done. Not only for the risk of having your embryos destroyed, but also for the risk of the future generation as a whole. Who are we to say that if we have a boy (or girl) that the world would be better for the whole in the future. Yes, I realize that the majority of you have so many children of a specific gender and are pining for just one of the opposite sex to make your dreams come true. But what if you had been born a the opposite sex because your parents got with some doctor and decided to alter you. Hmmm. Just think about it. Analyze it. Then talk about it openly with your partner. If there is even the slightest inkling to refrain, then folow your heart.

Hi, I just want to say after 2 little boys we decided to go the microsort route. Well we did and the 3rd again was a beautiful little boy. Just remember even with the microsort it is not 100% guaranteed. NOW! I am so happy to have my little boy he is 2 now and probably the sweetest little guy you would ever meet. Just be careful if you decide to go ahead with this procedure and be prepared that it is not 100%. I also know a lady that had 4 boys and decided to do the procedure and after she had twin boys. Sometimes it is just not meant to be.

We have thought about adoption not in this country(UK) as we feel that childless couples should have them but maybe abroad(China etc) where girl children are needing homes. Hi! I am a mom and a freelance journalist. I have been researching gender selection and MicroSort for many years. I wanted to address some of the posts I have read here.

The chances of conceiving a boy when trying for a girl through MicroSort are very slim. There are very few "opposites." It has worked for many people that I know. And, it worked for us! We got our little girl after two boys. I even wrote a book about our experiences, "Chasing the Gender Dream."

MicroSort is not in Europe yet, but once the technology is out of FDA clinical trials, they expect it to be licensed in fertility clinics across the U.S. and in other parts of the world. The clinical trials are continuing and I believe they are going well. The MicroSort headquarters are in Fairfax, VA, and there is a Western U.S. location now in California (address given in an earlier post). MicroSort also has planned to open some other locations in the U.S., before clinical trials are over. And patients who would like to use MicroSort with IVF can go to a local collaborator in their state if there is one available. MicroSort has a list of doctors who collaborate with them.

Good luck to all who would like to pursue this journey. It's not easy, but the end result can be wonderful....

I am pregnant with my 3rd son. We want 4 children and I would love the last one to be a girl. I just read all your comments and I can empathize with all of you.

PGD sex selection has just been banned in Australia so we are seriously considering flying to America with 3 young boys and getting IVF PGD gender selection done there. I think Micro-sorting is a fairly new method and cheaper than IVF but we are going to pay the extra as the success rate with the IVF for desired gender is 99% - 100%

Click on this link to The Fertility Institutes that offer this in Los Angeles and Las Vegas
http://www.fertility-docs.com/fertility_gender.phtml

And can I just say to all the people out there that disagree with gender selection -
- This is a form of family balancing.
- If you have 2 or more of the same gender you totally understand the longing for the opposite gender.
- I love my sons so much and if I have a daughter I would not love them any less. And I would strongly disagree with anyone that accussed me of that.
- I do not need therapy!! Having a daughter would complete our family and my sons want a sister (no influence from us!) In fact my sons have never been told of our longing for a little girl to complete our family so their feelings are not affected and our love for them is very strong.
- If the technology is there why can't we use it?

Hi all,

I work at the BBC on a documentary series about IVF to be transmitted on BBC 1 in late 2006. The aim of the series is to give the audience an understanding of the science underpinning assisted reproduction, as well as an insight into what it is like to go through fertility treatment. We hope to reflect the subject as thoroughly as possible and give the definitive guide to fertility treatment.

We are interested to find and film a UK-based couple who are travelling abroad to get Microsort sperm separation. If you are interested in finding out more please contact me on sarah.taylor.01@bbc.co.uk or 0208 7525383

I'm a mother of 2 boys and would desperately love a little girl to complete our family. i am a c-section so i can only have 1 more baby and i would want nothing more than a girl. i want to have a relationship w/ my daughter like i do w/ my mother. your boys get older and just leave and call mom once in a while its just different. and i just want that feeling so when im older i have my daughter ver close to me. its amazing how technology advances that we can choose our baby's gender. as for you Hannah, dont talk what you do not know because when mothers have a couple of kids the same gender they wonder how lovely it would be to have the other, because of the different things you can do with them.its very nice to have both genders.and its not horrible, its AMAZING to be able to do something so incredible like that.

Hi,my partner and I would like another child and really want a little girl.I have a little boy from a previous relationship and my partner, two girls and a boy. We have started to follow a methord called "Smart Stork" which is based on timing and diet amongst other things.Anyone heard of it? Anyone been sucsessful using it? We have also been considering using a sperm sorting/spinning methord. Do they all spin the sperm ? because I cant believe that sper were ever meant to be spun at a high rpm and I would be concerned that this could affect their genetic make up and so harm the unborn foetus. Can anyone shed light on this? Are their any clinics in the uk ? or close at hand in europe that offer this service ? I am beginning to become very sceptical about all this,I have changed my diet accordingly being told to give up tea, coffee, alcohol, and chocolate to name but a few and adhere to various other gudelines. Do they really make that much difference in relation to trying to conceive a certain sex child ? This is why I am beginning to think that sperm sorting may give a more realistic outcome. Your thoughts, advice and experiences would be most welcome.
GOOD LUCK. Steve

To all of the others in Australia I can sympathise... Today I found out that I am pregnant with my fourth boy. I was so hoping this one would be a girl but now I am in tears. Don't get me wrong either - I love my boys to death and I would never give any one of them back. BUT I feel like I am being cheated out of my girl - that girl that I have dreamed of as long as I can remember. I personally could not do IVF for that reason. I could never discard the embryo's that were not female just because they were male BUT I would do IUI if it were available. Our Federal government needs to look at those families with 3 or more children of one sex and have some empathy for them... not just accuse them of ethical wrong for wanting a child of the other sex. (In my mind I think if you have 1 of one sex you should not use microsort unless it is genetic reasons but when you have 3 or in my case 4 of one sex then there is nothing morally wrong with wanting a child of the other sex!)

Does anyone have experience using Microsort because they are a carrier of an X-linked genetic disease? I am a carrier of a type of muscular dystrophy that is fatal to baby boys (there are 50/50 odds if I have a boy that he will be affected). My husband and I don't have children now, but needless to say, when we have them we want girls because we won't have to go through the potential heartache. Anyway, would love to hear of anyone else's experience with using Microsort for genetic reasons.

I live in Australia and have recently found out I am carrying my thirs son. So devistated after trying every NATURAL pre conception gender selection method known to man! Then I find out Australia Ethics Assoc has ceased PGD to family balance for community discussion of the ethical issues. I have written to them seeeking how does one contribute and how long will it be suspended or a decision made. All my hope is fading re having a daughter. I am now looking into over seas options, NOT the US, too expensive and too far, I have recently found it is legal and obtainable in Thialand, Malaysia and Singapore if you have three children of one gender. I am still gathering info IE costs. E Mail me I will happily share what I have. All I can say is this tiny bit of hope is keeping going through this pregnancy, grief does not explain what I am feeling. It is good to know you are not alone.
The law, my age and 3 C Sections are going against me currently!!

Hello,

I have two handsome boys ages 8 and 5 and I would love to have a girl. I've been researching Microsort for a couple of years and now decided to take a chance. I've been approved for the clinical trail and have a consultation today (5/9/06). It's a 91% chance of a girl and I hoping and praying we will be pregnant by July. If you have any questions just email me at whanda_t@yahoo.com.

I have two boys and i am desperate to have a baby girl. please can some one let me know whether there is a microsort treatment in Australia. if yes i need to know where.

Whanda said at May 31, 2006 11:40 AM:

~Update~

I filled out the initial paperwork which was my history and my husband’s health records. We were approved right away and needed to pay for the consultation. It was $350. 00 for the consultation and we did ours over the phone because the clinic is an hour away. In addition, my husband was working and couldn’t get the time off. So I spoke with a nurse practitioner about the procedure, the statistics, and the price, how long would it take what foods I need to eat and vitamins. You should start on pre-natal tablets as soon as possible. Eat and exercise like normal and alcohol in moderation. However, a month before the produre cut out all alcohol. In addition, every week your husbands needs to ejaculate at least 2 -3 times a week so there is no build up and new sperm is made. On average a man ejaculates 1 million sperm in this procedure once the sperm is spun only a couple hundred is injected.
The price was just increased so the Microsort is $3k and the other miscellaneous cost like blood test, lab work and so on will be an estimated total of $3,900. However, usually lab work or any additional fees can be paid for by your health insurance. It usually takes a person between 1 and 3 cycles (or tries) to get pregnant so if you don’t conceive the first try you will have to pay an additional 3K for a second or third try. On average the highest pregnancy rate is .19 % per cycle. Once you’re injected with the sperm you can find out your pregnant within 2 weeks. Then at 15 weeks you can find out the gender. You have a 91% chance of conceiving a girl or 9 in 10 chances versus the normal 50/50 chance. Out of 800 procedures performed by Mircosort only 14 couples aborted the babies. But out of those 14-16 couples only 2 aborted the babies due to wrong gender. I received the additional paperwork to proceed with the procedure. So I’m hoping to be pregnant by July once all the paperwork is processed. I hope this helps but if you need more info let me know.
Here the site for more info:
http://www.havingbabies.com/gender-selection.html

Thanks and good luck to you!!

Has anyone done any post-natal sex selection methods, any tests that can be done in the very early weeks followed by abortion. Since abortion is allowed for any reason whatsoever there is no reason it should not be offered for sex selection. I'm only asking since IVF PGD is no longer offered in Australia which is really upseting.

I can't believe you people! Children are not some commodity or something that you pick at the grocery store. They are a gift, and not something that we craft. If you study the history of 'selection' of the fit just the last 100 years, I don't think you would be so quick to jump on this bandwagon. A zeitgeist right before my very eyes. Unbelievable.

Hi
I am also very keen to find out any information regarding clinic's in the UK and their European connections. I have heard of the Rainsbury Clinic but would appreciate any feedback regarding them please.
It's a minefield out there!
If anyone has had a successful experience from the UK I would love to hear from them.
Thanks, Alison.

Hello,

We have two beautiful daughters and would love our next child to be a boy. We live in London, UK and we would like to know if there are any gender clinics ideally in the UK. However I am prepared to travel anywhere in Europe.

I would be grateful if anyone can tell me about the microsort technique, how successful it is and whether it is worth doing.

Thank you. My email address is:sprinja@hotmail.com

Hello, I understand both views of peoples opinions coming from a mother that has 5 young Girls 13,5,4,2,11months. I feel very blessed to have my girls and we are all so close as a family. I feel and often wonder what it would be like to have a boy in the family besides my husband. I dont think some will understand what a mom will feel, unless they have been there themselves. I would never critisize or judge one for wanting to get information about this. I prayed many times because i wasnt sure if God would be upset with me if I did this procedure. He will answer my prayers. I wish only the best for all of you.

TheMann said at July 12, 2008 06:29 PM:

Hi everyone- There seems to be a lot of confusion on this subject. I see that this discussion has been going on for a long time. Between me and my wife, we have six children. 5 girls and 1 boy. She had three coming into this relationship(Two girls and one boy), I had one girl. We had two more girls together. We both always wanted a boy from me because of my many rare abilities as a male. We now hit the point where we can't really JUST try anymore.
I have done research in this area for several years now and I would like to shed some light on the subject. The two main ways of doing this are MicroSort and IVF/PGD.
Microsort- A method of separation of the sperm using a die that lights up the dna in the sperm under at UV light that determines the sex. You will find a lot of these clinics. Some harder than others to do this procedure for any situation. They have a success rate of about 70-75% for boys and 80-85% for girls. Not bad, but not perfect. Average cost about 3500us.
IVF/PGD- After researching this at The Fertility Clinics WWW.fertility-docs.com, I was convinced on what procedure we are using. The cost is higher but their success rate is 99.9%. They are based out of Los Angelos, Mexico and Las Vagas. With this procedure it also includes genetic testing against about 80 different genetic diseases. They have sub clinics around the US, or maybe around the world for that matter, that will do most of the work that will need to be done and then for about five days through the process you will need to go to one of those clinics. They are the best though. I believe the report said that they did 4 thousand + gender selections with a 100% success rate with the procedures being done in their clinics. Look it up on there website that I provided.
Oh Yeah- There are very few restrictions on who they except for this procedure. You have to have more one or more of the opposite sex than the one you desire. You will find that most clinics have a list of restrictions.

Feel free to ask about any additional information.
I will let you know how it goes.
