The Growing Market For Donor Eggs

The first article cites the example of ads run in a student newspaper offering Stanford female students $50,000 for egg donation.

The use of egg donors is increasing at nearly 20 percent annually, as more women delay childbearing to the point where their own eggs are in trouble. (If human cloning, which relies on ripe eggs, becomes a reality, it will call for even more donors.) Though some years off, new technology might help. Scientists are finding ways to ripen eggs in test tubes rather than in women's bodies, eliminating the risk of ovary-stimulating drugs. And frozen egg technology will enable women to store their own eggs for later use–rather than look to vulnerable students in search of tuition payments.

This article doesn't explain why most egg sources are cheaper than the Stanford example.

In the United States, prices vary greatly from clinic to clinic, but you should expect to pay between $15,000 and $20,000 for one donor egg or embryo in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle. This includes the cost of compensation for the donor (usually about $5,000) and one cycle of IVF (usually between $12,000 and $17,000). If your insurance policy doesn't cover this treatment, you'll have to pay the entire cost up front.

Someone who was considering using donor eggs who looked into this market tells me there is a large price premium on higher IQ donor eggs. It is not a coincidence that the advertisement offering such a high price for donor eggs was run in a Stanford newspaper. In order to get into Stanford one has to be exceptionally bright. The Ivy League students get higher price offers to be egg donors as well. The growing use of donor eggs is driving up the price. That $50,000 price is literally a multiple of what it was a few years ago for top quality eggs.

Donor eggs are not a panacea for aging women. Their bodies are less able to support a pregnancy.

However, these successful pregnancies do not come risk free for older women. Even among women in their 50s who had passed a rigorous physical, the study found a 20 percent risk of gestational or pregnancy induced diabetes and a 35 percent risk of preeclampsia or pregnancy related high blood pressure.

The use of donor eggs is not always reported as such.

They make it look easy -- the celebrities who are regularly featured on tabloid covers, appearing to have almost effortlessly had a baby or two when they're beyond their 20s or 30s.

"These are women who are in their 40s, often late 40s, and the tabloids are saying they just had twins. And what they don't say is that these women used donor eggs," says Dr. Michael P. Diamond, director of reproductive endocrinology and infertility at Wayne State University, Detroit Medical Center and Hutzel Hospital.

In the long run technologies for viable creating eggs from cells and the genome of the mother-to-be will be developed. Eventually it will be possible to manipulate adult fully differentiated cells to make them do meiotic cell division to produce eggs. It will even become possible to grow new ovaries from stem cells just as it will become possible to grow other types of replacement organs from stem cells. It is likely that in many cases (depending on each woman's willingness to do so) these techniques will be done in conjunction with gene therapy that fixes any harmful mutations that one doesn't want to pass along to offspring. There will even be gene therapy to modify genetic sequences to produce changes that are enhancements such as higher intelligence or changes in appearance.

I would like to donate my eggs but believe that 5 thousand or 6 thousand is not enough money. These eggs are a precious gift and it's not so much the money but knowing that the gift is so important that all they are willing to pay is a small price is sad to me and I would want my eggs to be in the best care and knowing that they would do anything to have a precious baby not to send some cheap price to get it. May seem arogent but these are priceless.

How many eggs are you allowed to donate because if you think about it, its scary to think that there are a couple of your eggs out there.....the children grow and meet someone thats technically or genetically their half brother or sister and then there's incest....not purposely but its something to seriously consider.....i hope they limit you to some extent. I'm for it, but wow...it could be an ugly thing like cloning in the end.

If you do not have advanced degrees or a high IQ or other evidence of superior intellect my guess is you aren't going to find anyone who will pay much for your sperm. Sperm donation is much much easier and less risky than egg donation. So sperm is a buyers' market.

Only sperm are used. Sperm donations fetch very little money unless you have a very high IQ and credentials from elite university. Even in that case the money is not that much. Sperm donation is easy. There is no shortage of sperm donors. Egg donation is difficult and comes with some risks.

Males should just forget the idea of making money off their sperm or testicles.

Females who can not demonstrate high IQs and and show impressive credentials are not going to make top dollar from their egg donations and should lower their expectations.

I've read a lot about the price tag attached to egg donation, and don't really understand... for me it isn't about money, and I can't grasp the concept that how much one is paid for helping someone have a child is the important factor. Maybe my lack of understanding comes from my own experiences: I've carried my own biological child for another couple who could not have children of their own, had several miscarriages which resulted in my being told while I had no problems conceiving I couldn't carry a child, then did eventually carry a beautiful son full term. The daughter I gave up for adoption is gorgeous, very well-adjusted and has fantastic parents. She and her brother (my son) are very close, as are she and I... as friends. I've been on both ends, been able to carry two beautiful children and been told I'd never be able to carry a child. There's no way I could ever attach a price tag to being part of someone being able to have a child of their own, and I don't think I'll ever be able to understand or respect anyone who sees that price tag above all else. If I'd known about egg donation before I passed the suitable age, I'd have been doing what I could to help anyone who wanted it.

Several decades ago, those in desperate need of cash to provide for themselves or their loved ones sometimes clung to the notion that if all else failed, they could always "sell their bodies to medical science." A common rumor that took root after World War II had it that anyone (of sound body) could arrange to sell his remains to Harvard Medical School — the school would pay such a donor $500 in advance, tattoo the words "Property of Harvard Medical School" on the bottom of one of his feet, and arrange upon his death for his body to be immediately shipped to the school for
dissection.

That the Anatomical Gifts Program at Harvard didn't pay for bodies (they accepted anatomical donations only from persons who specified such a desire in their wills and whose wishes were supported by surviving relatives) didn't stop them from receiving several inquiries every week from people interested in obtaining pre-mortem cash payments. (If for no other reason, paying for bodies in advance would have been a bad business practice because the school had no way of stopping people from taking the cash and then fleeing somewhere they couldn't be found, or from deliberately arranging for their bodies to be mutilated in a way that would make them useless to the medical school.)

Since the 1960s, however, the rise of transplant technology has caused a shift in this class of rumor. Now the emphasis of "body sale" rumors is on selling organs that have value as transplant material, a scheme that putatively allows a donor to enjoy the proceeds of his sale immediately, as the buyer runs no risk in shelling out the cash since he gets to collect the merchandise at the time of payment.

Of course, these anatomical donations would be limited to the small set of in-demand organs that one could spare and still remain alive — that is, organs we have two of. Kidneys are an obvious choice (being much sought after for transplant into dialysis patients), but most potential donors are aware that U.S. law prohibits the sale of such organs. (The same restriction applies to other less-desirable donor options, such as corneas or lungs.)

So, somewhere along the rumor highway, the "body sale" rumors morphed into the idea that men could sell one of their testicles to a university medical research group (to be used for dissection or transplantation) for a hefty fee. It sounds like a great scheme — the removal of a testicle presents little in the way of health risks and doesn't interfere with function (i.e., a man can still obtain an erection, engage in sexual intercourse, and produce sperm with only a single testicle). The only significant drawback might be a cosmetic one, but even that could be overcome through the implantation of a prosthetic testicle.

Unfortunately for men seeking quick windfalls, no university or other medical organization buys testicles. The National Organ Transplant Act of 1984 prohibits the sale or human organs and tissues, and that prohibition applies to testicles just the same as kidneys and other organs. Nonetheless, this rumor has run rampant in the last several years, with those desirous of selling portions of their male anatomy believing some university out there really and truly will pay for donated testicles. Such claims often identify a particular school that supposedly will pony up a hefty fee for these items, and they often include small details that seem to lend the rumors an air credibility — that only left testicles will are accepted, or that the purchase price increases with the size of the donated organ.

One interesting change in the form of this legend is that while "body sale" rumors of years past specified a relatively modest fee (e.g., $500 to $1,000) for the sale of a whole corpse, modern rumors claim that a testicle donation will bring the seller anywhere from $50,000 to $160,000 for a single organ. Even allowing for several decades of inflation, that's quite a jump in purchasing power. Perhaps the increase in dollar figures reflects a modern awareness of the premium value of organs to our medical and biotechnology industries, or perhaps it's a tangible representation of just how highly men prize their family jewels.

As a mother of a 15 year old from a previous marriage who has lost both ovaries since then, I have a real problem with wondering why people who are healthy can not do something as precious as giving a couple a chance of having a baby without expecting to be payed. We could give a child all that he/she would ever need, but coming up with $15000.00 to $40000.00 to start IVF with donor eggs and still keep our home and raise a 15 year old is almost impossible. Bailey, that is really sweet of you. However, nobody gets 15000-40000 for selling egges. Agencies offer $2000-6000. It usually starts with 3500 and if you are a 2nd, 3rd, etc donner it ges up to 60000.There are tons of agencies you can ckeck on line. Just go to goolr, type "egg donor" and you will get hundreds of entries.

They were interested in the idea that maybe there was a particular reason that these men could produce both sexes. It is all made up. Most likely some college student tossing up ideas about a thesis.
