China Might Accelerate Nuclear Power Ramp Up

China's government is considering a more aggressive program to build new nuclear electric power plants.

CHENGDU, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- China may raise its total installed nuclear power generating capacity to 70 million kilowatts by 2020,75 percent higher than government target set in 2006, says a senior energy official.

China's projected future carbon dioxide emissions are causing concern in the Chinese government. If China opted for a big nuclear build that would slow the rate of growth of Chinese CO2 emissions.

China could care less about CO2 emissions and rightly so. There have been riots in China over air quality. It is the number one health issue with a million excess deaths a year. The regime is building nuclear plants to reduce air pollution and to retain their power.

The Chinese government could very well be concerned about CO2 emissions -- or, more specifically, be concerned that western nations, including the US, would at some point start instituting trade barriers against countries that emit too much CO2.

Alternately, they may wish to preserve their coal reserves for production of synthetic liquid fuels, such as methanol, DME, methanol-derived gasoline, and FT hydrocarbons.

There is the possibility that lots of people in China have genuine concerns about the future if the world, themselves included, doesn't get a handle on GHG emissions. Until now they may have been keeping an eye to how seriously the US and others take the issue. Do people expect China to be the world leader in this? It's not impossible, especially when they are likely to be the biggest manufacturing centre for renewable technologies. When the price for PV drops to where it's a clear winner, it will probably end up mass produced in China.

There is not much excuse at this point for anyone to think that greenhouse gases are causing global warming, or that they present any other threat. The planet is rapidly cooling due to the recent fall off in solar activity, just as it warmed during the twentieth century when solar activity was high. Human impacts are negligable.

The enviro doom-mongers are just religious fanatics. Worse, they usually are rich white bastards trying to force the poor of the world to stay poor. To hell with them.

China should build lots of nuke plants cause its a good, reliable source of energy. The US should do the same. Of course, we have the same rich pansies blocking nuclear energy. The eco-nazies are the worst people on the planet.

Missing the point: Nuclear power generation is not susceptible to outside influences as is the case with imported oil.
