Men Married To Younger Women Live Longer

Many of my readers are looking for any edge they can find to extend their lives. They are willing to embrace scientific research results that suggest that a dietary practice or lifestyle choice will help them live long enough to still be around when rejuvenation therapies hit the market. I share this desire. With this thought in mind I have a tip for the guys: Danish men who marry women much younger than them live longer.

According to the research, if a man marries a woman 15 and 17 years his junior, his chances of dying early are cut by one fifth. Also, it suggests that men cut the risk of premature death by 11 percent if their wives are seven to nine years younger.

Another aspect highlighted by the study was that men who opted for older wives have an 11 percent higher chance of dying earlier.

Now, it could be that guys who do not age as fast are more attractive in their 40s and 50s than guys who age more rapidly. So they have an advantage over more rapidly aging guys when pursuing younger women. Then they also live longer for the same reason they were able to get the young woman. But some readers might want to play it safe and marry a younger woman just on the chance this might help. Maybe she'll care for you with more energy in your old age. Or maybe you'll just find more reason to live looking at a young hottie.

The study used a pretty big cohort of people.

The study, which covered the entire population of Denmark, tracked all deaths between 1990 and 2005.

I hear Randy Newman singing "You give me reason to live".

The linked articles don't state whether the statistics are controlled for the mens age at marriage (ie that a 40 year old marrying a woman on 25 lives longer than one who marries one of 40 rather than just lumping together all men who marry women that have a give age difference, regardless of the men's ages at marriage.) They also unfortunately don't discuss if there was any correlation between age of marriage and financial status. Various research shows a very strong correlation between longevity and financial status. Since people dying in, say, 1995 at 65 would have been 20 in 1950 they may well be studying a time period where men with professional jobs with good financial prospects married later (admittedly choosing younger wives) whilst men working in lower class, often manual jobs with poor financial prospects married much earlier (and hence tended to marry women of the roughly same age). If this is a strong part of the "explanation" then in coming years the ages of wives will only have an influence in as much as this is retains a correlation with financial status.

I made a huge mistake when I married my first wife. Not only is she older, but she is dumber than a mule. I am hoping to find a younger and smarter and better looking woman perhaps half my age next time. Wish me luck.

A typo.

Danish men who marry women much ****longer**** than them live longer.

Seems clear selection bias. Middle-aged men in poorer health will be less likely to pursue or attract younger women in the first place. Correlation != causation, yada, yada, yada.

Funny how the same folks--almost invariably women--who would never criticize same-sex unions, much less those who marry outside their race, faith, or nationality, show extreme disapproval, even outrage, when an older man weds a much younger women. The obvious benefits for both parties in a May-December pairing seem to count for nothing to these critics. Odd.

Brett Bellmore said at June 7, 2009 3:10 AM:

I don't know about Denmark, but there's a class of May-December pairings ripe for research here in the US, which tends to involve men of relatively moderate means: 'Mail order brides'. It's a way men who could never hope for "trophy wives" find young wives anyway, and if my experience is any guide, it's mostly resorted to by guys who for one reason or another have given up on finding a domestic bride.

My own experience would suggest that the mechanism is that, being married to somebody 21 years younger, you find it impossible to lapse into a state of comfortable inactivity. It's like being married to a drill Sargent, only more carrot, and less stick.

@ David Govett:

Well there's already a site for attractive young women hoping to meet sugar daddies and vice versa. I forgot the name but I think it's establishedmen.com or something like that.

I agree that self selection is working here. But I can't study every paper in detail; maybe they have somehow factored that out.

Let me guess. People who rarely go to doctors are healthier than those receiving regular medical care. And those receiving the most intensive care are the most likely to die. Abolish medicine.

But what do you think a pretty a 35-year-old woman sees in a 55-year-old man? It's that wad in his pants - made up of 10000 Danish Krone bills.

It might just come down to the reduced chance that the men will be widowed much before their 80s, if ever. The experience of losing a spouse is devastating to both sexes, but I suspect more so for men, especially men of the age cohort under examination here.

My father, who recently passed away, thought my mom could make better-tasting ice water. On the rare occasions she was out for the evening and couldn't make him dinner, the only thing he could think of to do was order pizza for delivery. He couldn't fry an egg or heat a can of soup. If she had died first, I shudder to think what would've happened. They were about five years apart.

Men want sex. Women want monetary security. Sounds like a profession I've heard of.

So checking out my daughters friends is good for my health? Not if my wife finds out.

I'd like to see the study for older women marrying younger men and longevity.

I have been thinking about this, trying to think about it from different perspectives. (The "Application" of it.) I understand the pursuit of long life and the appeal of ways it can be sought. In a situation such as this, however, i cannot help but think to the question: perhaps the greater goal is maximizing ones (preferably long) life? (versus simply lengthening it for its own sake). Ones choice of mate, I believe, would be wisely considered ultimately through the lens of ones own resonance, connection, and expectation of connection and resonance in the future, with this person - over the possibility their day's digits would be greater than they otherwise may be. What are more days if they are hollower?

Some women can bring a man to his death if they are younger. What if the girl hasn't matured. What if he's ready to settle down and the girl is still in a party mode? I believe it all is determined on both individuals morals, goals and commitment. Why does it need to be about being selfish. If you marry a young woman to keep you young, does that make you happy? No, maybe you'll die lonely, maybe she won't be able to share commonalities with you. Your choice die happy with a woman or man you love, not something you made and exception for for your own personal benefits.

I am presently 72 and married to a woman presently 49, 23 years younger than I. But I am not happy with her and have a new prospect waiting for the divorce. She is 44, 28 years younger. Why am I attracted to them? Heh heh. Men know why. Why are they attracted to me? Stability and money. I look in countries where making a decent living is difficult. I can offer them a good life, lots of travel, security. There is no shortage of fine looking women happy to find that. Will I live longer. Bet your sweet ass, or hers.
