I wonder what implications widespread usage of the pill will have on olfactory sensitive mating habits. No ovulation, no ovulation-smell.

Follow this logic chain:

1) A some of the quasi-legal drugs that athletes use to "enhance performance" work by artificially elevating testosterone levels.
2) Smelling the t-shirts of women who are ovulating elevates testosterone.
3) There is a market for this. Instead of t-shirts you can use t-shirt shields, have the women exercise to elevate the level of pheromone.
4) If this market took off, would congress make smelling women's arm pits for the purposes of performance enhancement (well, athletic performance) illegal?

Or, for those of you who are not as inclined to attribute every human action to evolutionary theories, maybe the ovulation t-shirts just smell better. Call it "moon breeze" and put it in a designer bottle.

Ovulation naturally occurs about once a month, and the egg typically lives for 12-24 hours after leaving the ovary.

I think people are confusing menstruation with ovulation. Ovulation typically takes place about two weeks before menstruation. Not sure what ovulation "smells" like.

Jake, according to this study, ovulation smells like a tee-shirt that's been worn by a woman who's ovulating. I'm not sure what that's supposed to be either, even if I break out my oenophile thesaurus ("hints of cinnamon and black cherry, with a slight lavender after-fragrance") or my recollections of high school ("volleyballer's gym bag without the ammonia overtone"). Presumably (if the study has any validity), the tee-shirts that have been worn by women during other (non-ovulating) parts of their cycles (including menstruation) lack that unique je ne sais quoi from the hormones associated with the actual release of the egg, and smell like some other kind of sweat.

The whole thing with pheremones is they work on the subconscious level. Women do not consciously smell different to you at different times of the month. However, women's sense of smell changes during the month due to hormonal fluctuations. I'd argue that men sometimes smell good to women and sometimes smell bad. The good likely coincides with ovulation.

Female pheromones work on women, too, as studies of women living together show (menstrual cycles sync up, etc.). I can smell female hormones in a public ladies' room (I actually find them very strong and rather unpleasant).

The prevalence of estrogen from birth control pills in the public water supply is actually very worrying. An argument can and has been made that it is feminizing generations of men, causing frogs to become hermaphroditic and male genitalia in certain species to be abnormally small. But since women rule everything now and we're so chickified, no one cares and nothing will be done. Great world we live in, huh?

Men smell better or worse to a woman depending on pregnancy. Men with immunity markers to a woman's smell better when she is pregnant, and men with dis-similar markers smell better when not pregnant. I expect the non-pregnant preference may be enhanced during ovulation too.

I speculate birth control, by simulating pregnancy, causes women to choose men they find incompatible when they decide to have children.

this 'study' must have been conducted by women. i don't know a single guy who gets off on the smell of a woman...that's why perfume was invented.
