Mid Life Overweight Faster Mental Decline

Keep off the pounds or lose your mind more rapidly.

The adverse affects of being overweight are not limited to physical function but also extend to neurological function, according to research in the latest issue of The Journals of Gerontology Series A: Biological and Medical Sciences (Volume 65A, Number 1).

The publication presents a collection of ten articles highlighting new findings related to obesity in older persons.

"One of the unanticipated consequences of improved medical management of cardiovascular disease is that many obese individuals reach old age,” said Journal of Gerontology: Medical Sciences Editor Luigi Ferrucci, MD, PhD, of the National Institute on Aging. “We need a better understanding of the causes and consequences of obesity in older individuals — especially when obesity is associated with sarcopenia.”

A study headed by Anna Dahl, MS, of Sweden’s Jönköping University, found that individuals with higher midlife body mass index (BMI) scores had significantly lower general cognitive ability and significantly steeper decline than their thinner counterparts over time. These statistics were compiled from a study of Swedish twins that took place over the course of nearly 40 years, from 1963 to 2002; the results were the same for both men and women.

The press release also describes how people with a history of cyclical weight loss and gain have more problems in their old age. Try to lose weight in a way that you can keep it off. Of course, that's much easier to say than do.

We need great weight loss drugs that adjust the metabolism to keep weight off without side effects.

We don't need any drugs for that.
Just stop the Krafts, Nestles and soft drink companies of the world selling crap in the shopping mall.
As long as high-fructose corn syrup isn't considered a poison (what it actually: the liver is the only thing in a human body that can metabolize it and its product chain equals that of alcohol)
But that that might not get you money from your pharmaceutical sponsor or fill the pocket of any medic.
Stop fighting crap with crap!

You just need to switch to pure water, keep away from anything containing high-fructose corn syrup and do a little exercise for 30min a day and one can even reverse a starting type 2 diabetes.

Do your homework:

Is it too much to ask that people exercise a little self control? I expect the government to mandate accurate and complete nutritional labeling. After that it's nobody's business. If you want to eat crappy foods, go for it. BTW, your health insurance provider is going to raise your rates just like if you were a bad driver.

HFCS? Seriously? You're fat because you eat too much. 95% of the fat population chose to be. This statistic approximated from the fact that 5.1% of the white and Mexican population suffers from hypothyroidism. 98% of the fat black population chose to be, from this same statistic. http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/122393-overview

If you chose to be, or lack the self control, perhaps your mind is already gone. This possibility leads to a new question of which is the cause and which is the effect?

I was going to write something educational, but instead I think I will just say: Fuck off!

The world has no shortage of assholes. We don't need any more.

One of the best tips for losing weight is buy smaller plates, then only eat food cooked at home. Small meals.

This is the only proven way to lose weight.

Bob Badour said at February 24, 2010 6:59 PM:

No, Jon, that is not the only proven way to lose weight.

Many ways to lose weight exist. Some of them healthier than others. Some of them more persistent than others.

This is a common misunderstanding. The correlation is between high body weight and mental decline (earlier death etc.) A few points are worth mentioning:

1) Your genes determine what your optimal size is. (look at parents, grandparents etc.) - if they are all skinny - and you are not, chances are you are in trouble,....if they all are round chances are you are genetically predisposed to be less than 'Twiggy' - trying to get there is more likely to make you malnourished - (i.e. more likely to depart early)

2) If you accept who you are genetically without pushing the boundaries, you are more likely to maximize your life potential. - and yes I know it stinks if your genes make you keel over at age 50, but as noted by the late Mr. Fix, you cannot fool your genes.

3) Until such time, when we can adjust both telomeres and genes, we will have to maximize the time our ancestors have given us. Fooling around trying to break our genetic destiny is at least until now a distinct loosing proposition.

Be sensible and enjoy life without asking for troubles seems to be the best advise.

peace
