Flax Seed Against Radiation Damage

A lot of people ask me "once the human-robot war begins how can I survive thermonuclear combat toe-to-toe with the robots?" and until now I haven't had a good answer. Well, science has come thru with a solution. Time to start stockpiling flax seed in your underground survival shelter (along with water filters, mini-EMP weapons for use against robots, and other survival essentials) because flax improved survival of mice exposed to lethal levels of radiation.

PHILADELPHIA - Flax has been part of human history for well over 30,000 years, used for weaving cloth, feeding people and animals, and even making paint. Now, researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania have discovered that it might have a new use for the 21st century: protecting healthy tissues and organs from the harmful effects of radiation. In a study just published in BMC Cancer, researchers found that a diet of flaxseed given to mice not only protects lung tissues before exposure to radiation, but can also significantly reduce damage after exposure occurs.

Flax is pretty much all you've got to go with today once you've gotten the exposure. Though underground shelters (with HEPA air filters of course) to avoid radiation exposure in the first place are a great option for anyone who can afford them and who can manage to stay near a shelter entrance.

"There are only a handful of potential mitigators of radiation effect, and none of them is nearly ready for the clinic," says the principal investigator Melpo Christofidou-Solomidou, PhD, research associate professor of Medicine, Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Division. "Our current study demonstrates that dietary flaxseed, already known for its strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, works as both a mitigator and protector against radiation pneumonopathy."

Would you rather have a 40% chance of survival or a 70% to 88% chance?

In several separate experiments, the researchers fed one group of mice a diet supplemented with 10 percent flaxseed, either three weeks before a dose of X-ray radiation to the thorax or two, four, or six weeks after radiation exposure. A control group subjected to the same radiation dose was given the same diet but receiving an isocaloric control diet without the flaxseed supplement. After four months, only 40 percent of the irradiated control group survived, compared to 70 to 88 percent of the irradiated flaxseed-fed animals. Various studies of blood, fluids, and tissues were conducted.

Large dose of flaxseed is required - 10% of diet (not sure whether by weight, or by calories). See:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2745149/

Some of that same research group found that curcumin (in very large doses) has similar effect -
"Dietary curcumin increases antioxidant defenses in lung, ameliorates radiation-induced pulmonary fibrosis, and improves survival in mice"
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20426658%20?from=nfsummer2010

The curcumin doses used, though, are large - toxicity would have to be checked, and would be quite expensive. Perhaps, it might be synergistic with flaxseed, especially since the flaxseed oil might increase bioavailability and decrease required dose.

Still, if the Fukushima dangers are being understated for political reasons, this might become common practice.

Would flaxseed inoculation before radiation treatment for cancer diminish tumor death, or protect other tissues?

Lou Pagnucco said at August 10, 2011 10:06 PM:

Kai,

In the study, the mice were protected by dietary flax seed for several weeks before the radiation.

It may be reasonable to take flax before extensive radiation imaging, but not before radiation treatment, in case it protects cancer cells as well as normal tissue.

But, the dose is high. Who knows what the side effects would be?

Having used flaxseed in cooking, constipation would NOT be one of the side effects ;)

This is simply not true.. Aeolus Pharmaceuticals has a $118MM contract from the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) to develop their catalytic antioxidant AEOL-10150 as a medical countermeasure for the Lung sub-syndrome of Acute Radiation Exposure. 10150 has already been through two Phase I safety trials in humans. It has already demonstrated efficacy post-exposure in two species (murine and non-human primate) at radiation doses in excess of 11.5 Gy.

Since there is no ethical way to conduct human efficacy trials in acute radiation exposure, medical countermeasures must be developed under the FDA's Animal Rule, which requires safety trials in humans, description of mechanism of action and efficacy in two pivotal animal trials.

Under Aeolus' contract, it must apply for an Emergency Use Authorization by summer 2013, which means BARDA/HHS could begin stockpiling 10150 in Q3 2013.

Neupogen (Amgen) is already being stockpiled by BARDA/HHS under an EUA to treat the hematopoeitic sub syndrome of ARS

Ken, “horizontal” Love it!, man that one made me laugh… @ “Bee” Thanks for the positivity: Ditto… You know that this system of communication is lacking in so much of what can be communicated; Ugh! written language. What a line to Talk the Walk and expect All to hear. Early on I had to retract and apologize for posting comments which I thought said one thing and in fact were my perceptual misnomers.( French-Mesnomer? ) Most of what my very rushed rant was about came after fasting and vision quest. Family was pushing me to move earthly and tell of visions… So, the written may have been easily misconstrued. Not my intent, I was barely present, and those that care for an old dancer like me thought I was wasting “Medicine” on a laptop: devices are a drain on my visions. I back you in almost all of you efforts, and it does astound me that you can post and respond as quickly as you do. ( I was speaking in a combination of generic and “In the proverbial sense”. ) Doubt, You could post that I wouldn’t learn or at least light up with a smile. Oh…, Positivity/Progressive movement/The inertia is truly changing/Minions will “Awaken”… Pieces of healing from beyond the veil… Survive-All… Spirit Awareness/Creative Preparedness…
