The Big Feb. 15, 2013 Near Earth Asteroid Fly-By

Asteroid 2012 DA14 is coming to visit. The 150 foot asteroid (big enough to wipe out a city) will pass inside geosynchronous orbit and

Amateurs found it.

We really ought to make a bigger effort to find killer asteroids. We might already know about an extinction event asteroid coming our way if we'd spend the Space Shuttle or International Space Station money on asteroid detection instead.

It does not fit into the election cycle or the fiscal period, therefore it "is not a problem".

Until it is.

In fact there are quite few asteroid detection projects now https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Neo-chart.png

while it is far from being complete we know that almost all 1+ ( about 1000 of them ) km asteroids won't hit earth in foreseable future. The more dangerous is asteroid - the more chance we already know it orbit.

For large ( unknown ) asteroids current telescope systems could provide a warning ( the system was already tested last year), which will allow to evacuate people before hand.

So - the really great problem for earth has quite a low probability and effort to reduce it is ongoing

btw just for comparison dinosaurs were killed by 10 km asteroid http://www.livescience.com/26933-chicxulub-cosmic-impact-dinosaurs.html

so we are safe from this ( or 10 times less big asteroid ) for now. and have not very high probability to be seriously hit by something really unexpected without few days warning
