Battery Packs As Car Structural Parts

Imagine your car trunk lid as a battery pack.

The same sort of thinking applies to solar panels. Check out solar photovoltaic roof shingles.

This has been used in diesel submarines for many decades: the batteries are placed next to the hull, to provide protection from attack. Diesel submarines are the largest and oldest extended range EVs in the world. It's a high power, high reliability application...

The DOW shingles look rather more expensive than conventional PV - has anyone seen a cost per kWp?

Nick G, solar roofing material is more expensive than conventional solar panels, but they do save the cost of buying normal roofing material that is under normal solar panels, so that has to be figured in when working out the total cost. They do seem a little expensive at the moment, but I presume they will get cheaper and become the cost effective choice for new construction.
